MLS Laser Therapy
At Sierra Foot & Ankle, we’re committed to staying on the leading edge of research and technology when it comes to alleviating chronic and acute foot and ankle issues. That dedication is what inspired us to create the Sierra Foot & Ankle Laser Therapy Center of Excellence.
Several years ago, we were one of the first practices in the area to offer PinPointe laser therapy for fungal toenails. Since then, we’ve added another laser to help patients with acute and chronic soft tissue injuries.
It’s called MLS laser therapy, and it’s been a revolution for our patients—bringing them freedom from chronic pain, and results that last.
What is MLS Laser Therapy and How Does it Work?
MLS stands for Multiwave Locked System. It is a robotically controlled, FDA-approved device that uses a pair of therapeutic lasers, set at different wavelengths:
- A 808nm beam (primarily responsible for reducing inflammation and edema)
- A 905nm beam (primarily responsible for relieving pain)
The lasers are synchronized in a way that enhances the effectiveness of each, allowing significantly greater results than could be achieved with previous therapeutic laser technology.
Light, as you may recall from high school science class, is a form of energy. And the light from the MLS laser penetrates 3-4 cm into injured tissues, where it energizes your body’s cells and accelerates their natural healing processes with consistent and repeatable results.
Clinical benefits include (but are not limited to):
Reduction in swelling and pain
Formation of new capillaries
Increased cellular metabolism
Improved nerve function
Improved immune system function
In other words, MLS laser treatment doesn’t just help you relieve your pain. It also helps your body repair itself faster from all kinds of damage, including muscle tears and surgical wounds, and reduces the risk of scarring and infection.
What Kinds of Conditions Can Benefit from MLS Laser Therapy?
MLS laser therapy has proven to be effective for about 85-90 percent of all patients suffering from some kind of musculoskeletal pain or inflammation. That includes things like:
- Plantar fasciitis
- Achilles tendinitis
- Muscle strains
- Tendon ruptures
- Arthritis
- Neuromas
MLS laser is also a good choice for accelerating wound healing, whether that wound was accidental (e.g., diabetic ulcer) or a surgical site.
And in many cases, it’s been documented that patients who may have had surgery recommended, or even scheduled, have been able to cancel because MLS therapy was able to heal their chronic problem non-invasively.

Other Benefits of MLS Laser Therapy
Though MLS laser therapy is not covered by insurance, it remains a highly cost-effective treatment option. You get better faster, which means fewer doctor visits, fewer co-pays, fewer unnecessary and ineffective treatments, and fewer missed days at work and lost productivity.
Some of the other significant benefits of this revolutionary treatment include:
No pain. There is no pain, burning sensation, or discomfort of any kind with MLS laser therapy. No anesthesia is required, either.
No side effects. In countless studies over dozens of years, no side effects have ever been reported for those who have undergone treatments.
Convenient. Most session times are under 15 minutes, depending on the size of the area being treated and the specific condition. Treatment courses range from just a couple of sessions up to 10 -12.
Fast results. Most people report significant improvement in symptoms after just 1-3 sessions.
Long-lasting relief. Because the system actually accelerates your body’s natural healing rather than just “masking” the pain, the results are cumulative and long-lasting.
Management therapy for chronic arthritis pain. Although laser therapy does not reverse damage done by arthritis, it does calm the inflammation surrounding the joint, thereby relieving pain. This treatment can be used initially to reduce all the inflammation around the joint, then used periodically as a tune-up to manage pain.
How We Use MLS Laser Therapy at Sierra Foot & Ankle
Because MLS laser therapy is so safe, effective, and versatile, it can be used both on its own or in combination with other advanced treatments and procedures in order to improve and accelerate the results.
For example:
- On its own as a primary treatment option: MLS laser therapy makes an extremely effective early treatment to quickly reduce pain and edema, and control wound healing. It’s also an excellent choice for dealing with arthritis pain resulting from a damaged joint.
- In combination with other advanced regenerative treatments: For injuries that are particularly difficult to heal (such as neuromas, plantar fascia ruptures, etc.), MLS used in combination with an AmnioFix injection—which also stimulates healing in damaged tissues—gives you the absolute best chance for repairing the damage quickly without surgery. But MLS can be used in combination with other types of therapy as well, including orthotics, physical therapy, and others.
- For post-surgical healing. Although MLS laser is often effective as an alternative to surgery, sometimes surgery is necessary. In that case, MLS treatments can help the surgical site heal faster, reducing the risk of infection as well as visible and nonvisible scarring, and will also help you recover faster.
