PinPointe Toenail Laser

Until recently, toenail fungus was one of the most frustrating and difficult foot conditions for podiatrists to treat. Topical antifungals don’t work very well, because they can’t get through the thickened nail. Oral antifungals take time to work and can sometimes come with unwanted side effects.

Fortunately, there’s a new, safer, and better way to get rid of those fungal toenails! Sierra Foot & Ankle is proud to offer treatment using PinPointe FootLaser, an FDA-cleared system that can successfully eradicate the fungus and help nails grow in clear—with none of the downsides of older forms of treatment!

How Does Laser Therapy for Fungal Toenails Work?

The PinPointe FootLaser uses focused beams of light to eradicate the fungus living underneath the nail.

Unlike topical medications, the nail laser has no trouble getting through the nail. The light passes right through with no interference to get at the infected nail bed underneath. It is able to pass through nail tissue to get at the infection causing it.

The power and wavelength of the beam has been precisely tuned so it poses no danger or risk to your nail, your skin, or any other healthy cells in the treatment area. However, it is deadly to fungus.

Because the procedure is completely safe, with no known side effects or contraindications, it can be used alongside oral or topical antifungal treatments if needed.

What Can I Expect from the Procedure?

Make sure all nail polish or decorations are removed at least 24 hours before your session. (In general, you shouldn’t be painting or covering your nails if you have toenail fungus.)

A single treatment session lasts about 30 minutes or less, depending on the number of toes that need treatment.

You may feel a mild warming sensation during the procedure, but the majority of patients do not experience any discomfort. There is no downtime or recovery afterward, and nothing you need to follow up with at home (unless you are taking other treatments concurrently). You can simply go back to your day.

In most cases, multiple treatment sessions are necessary to fully eliminate the fungus.

What Results Can I Expect?

Unfortunately, there is no “instant” cure for fungal toenails. Even once the fungus is dead, damage to the nail has been done. It may take several months for new, healthy, and clear nail(s) to grow in and replace the damaged portions.

That being said, many people experience noticeable improvement in the appearance of their nails after the 1st month of treatment. It may still take some time to achieve full, optimal results, but partial results may still be rapid and substantial!

Furthermore, laser therapy has consistently shown to be one of the most effective long-term solutions to fungal toenails, with higher cure rates (and patient satisfaction) than antifungal drugs. It’s convenient, drug free, and has no known side effects!

Can I Get Fungal Toenails Again?

All fungal toenail treatments—including laser and antifungal medications—can eradicate the current infection, but will not reduce your risk of developing another one later.

In all cases, we will strongly recommend that you take sensible foot hygiene precautions to reduce your risk of re-developing your infection. This includes things like washing your feet daily, trimming your nails regularly and correctly, and not wearing damp shoes and socks. We might also recommend using antifungal powders or sprays on your feet and shoes.

Fortunately, a combination of effective treatment and preventative care can significantly improve your probability of not only eliminating your toenail fungus, but keeping it away for good!
